The Coastal 500 is a global network of mayors and local government leaders committed to thriving and prosperous coastal communities. The network is founded on the belief that giving the communities closest to our ocean the tools, resources, and rights to care for them is the best way to restore and protect them.

 

The Coastal 500 named Finalist for the 2023 Earthshot Prize

On September 19, 2023, Prince William and The Earthshot Prize named the Coastal 500 as one of the 15 finalists for the 2023 Earthshot Prize, a prestigious global environmental award that celebrates and champions innovators focused on solving our most pressing global climate challenges. Each of the finalists receives support from Earthshot to scale their solutions.

Meet the Coastal 500

The Coastal 500 is made up of mayors and other local government leaders from communities across 8 countries. Each member pledges to take specific actions to build healthy, prosperous and thriving coastal communities by promoting responsible fishing behavior, advocating for fishers’ rights, encouraging participation in sustainable fisheries management, and sharing lessons and experiences with fellow Coastal 500 members.

NEWS: Rare elevates local leaders at the Our Ocean Conference

Coastal 500 leaders at Our Ocean in Panama.

At the 2023 Our Ocean Conference in Panama, Rare brought together Coastal 500 leaders from communities on the frontlines of ocean conservation.

“Elevating local leaders and supporting community-led solutions is core to Rare’s mission. At Our Ocean, we were determined to do both,” stated Rare President Caleb McClennen after his trip to Panama.
