Why Rare works in Latin America & the Caribbean
Latin America and the Caribbean is home to some of the world’s greatest concentrations of biodiversity — from tropical forests and coral reefs to mangroves, mountains, and freshwater systems. These ecosystems support millions of people with food, livelihoods, and cultural identity, yet they are increasingly threatened by climate change, habitat loss, and unsustainable resource use. Protecting this region is essential not only for local communities, but also for global climate stability and the preservation of irreplaceable species.

Advancing community-led fisheries in Guatemala
Guatemala’s Caribbean coast lies along the Mesoamerican Reef and is home to rich mangroves, seagrass beds, and coral ecosystems that sustain coastal communities. Small-scale fisheries are a cornerstone of the regional economy and culture, supporting the livelihoods of coastal families who depend on the reef.
