The Our Ocean Conference is an international gathering of national governments, international organizations, and ocean advocates making commitments to support tangible progress toward a healthier ocean. The conference was started by former US Secretary of State John Kerry in 2014.
This year’s conference takes place in the wake of the historic Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) signed last December in Montreal at the UN Conference (COP15) of the Convention on Biodiversity. The GBF included the target of protecting 30 percent of the world’s land and water by 2030, known as 30×30. Rare’s delegation to Our Ocean will highlight why focusing on the coastal, territorial seas is critical to achieving 30×30 while also meeting the needs of local communities who depend on nature for food and livelihoods.
