Rare in Brazil
Brazil is one of the most biologically diverse countries in the world, recognized globally for its vital landscapes like the Amazon Rainforest and coastal fisheries. Nestled within the Amazonian biome is the world’s second-largest mangrove forest, stretching 13,989 square kilometers across Brazil’s Amapá, Pará, and Maranhão states. The lush vegetation provides food for millions of people and habitat for hundreds of species of plants, arthropods, mollusks, crustaceans, fish, and birds.
The majority of Brazil’s small-scale fishers live in the country’s northern and northeastern states. Unsustainable fishing practices, habitat degradation, poor fisheries management, and external factors like climate change threaten these coastal fisheries. Sustainable management of Brazil’s coastal fisheries and resources is necessary for food security, fisher livelihood, and global biodiversity.
