Ensuring policies meet the needs of communities on nature’s frontlines

The Rare approach to driving policy for conservation
Rare works alongside communities, local leaders, and government partners to advance policies that support community-led conservation and secure equitable access to natural resources.
Creating the conditions to advance policy
Rare works to create the conditions for effective policies that enable local communities to strengthen their rights, governance, and livelihoods while protecting biodiversity.
We partner with national and local governments to strengthen coastal governance and advance community-led approaches that protect ecosystems and expand Indigenous Peoples and local communities’ access to natural resources.
We partner with governments and global leaders to advance policies that foster nature-based climate resilience while strengthening food security and financial stability for frontline communities.
Through networks like Coastal 500, we equip mayors and local leaders with the resources to design, implement, and scale locally-led adaptation solutions for their municipalities.
We design policies with people in mind, using behavioral science to ensure frameworks are adopted, implemented, and built to last.
Where we work
Formalizing the rights of small-scale fishing communities to sustainably fish and manage local coastal waters improves fisheries governance, prevents industrial development and overexploitation of key resources, and can ensure healthy and thriving marine ecosystems. Rare works to support local fisheries management bodies, to enable participatory management of coastal ecosystems.

Africa
Africa hosts extraordinary biodiversity, from megafauna and rich coastal ecosystems to forests, savannas, and grasslands that support wildlife found nowhere else on Earth. These landscapes are also the backbone of food security and economic opportunity for millions of people.
Asia Pacific
The Asia Pacific region encompasses some of the richest marine and terrestrial biodiversity on Earth, including the Coral Triangle. Millions of people rely on these ecosystems for food, livelihoods, and protection from storms and sea-level rise.

Latin America
Latin America and the Caribbean is home to some of the world’s greatest concentrations of biodiversity — from tropical forests and coral reefs to mangroves, mountains, and freshwater systems. These ecosystems support millions of people with food, livelihoods, and cultural identity.
