The Mesoamerican Reef is the second largest barrier reef in the world, and the largest in the Western Hemisphere. It sustains local food systems, as well as the livelihoods of thousands of local small- scale fishers. But degradation to the reef has led to the decline of local fisheries. In this case study, we tell the story of how Rare partnered with local communities in Honduras to place over 14,000 square kilometers of coastal ocean waters under sustainable, community-led management and build the movement for community-led ocean conservation across the nation’s Caribbean coast.
