Why Rare works in the Andes-Amazon region

The Andes-Amazon region is one of the most biodiverse places on Earth. Its forests, rivers, mountains, agricultural landscapes, mangroves, and coastal ecosystems sustain millions of people and play a critical role in regulating the global climate.

Yet deforestation, land degradation, destructive fire, unsustainable resource use, and climate change are putting growing pressure on these ecosystems and the communities that depend on them. Smallholder farmers and small-scale fishers are especially vulnerable to these changes — and are essential partners in protecting and restoring the landscapes and waters they call home.

Rare’s work in the region

Rare works with smallholder farmers and small-scale fishers to put community-led conservation into practice across land and sea.

In Colombia, Rare works with farmers to advance regenerative agriculture, improving soil and water health, restoring ecosystems, and strengthening rural livelihoods. Along Brazil’s Amazon coast, Rare partners with fishing communities to strengthen community-led fisheries management and protect mangroves and other critical coastal ecosystems. Across the region, Rare is also exploring innovative finance approaches that can help communities sustain and scale conservation.
