Everyday Sustainability
Never underestimate your power to make a difference. Our everyday choices can help improve the air we breathe, strengthen the health of our communities, and protect our planet for future generations.
As a global organization supporting people to live better for themselves and the planet, Rare has identified proven, high-impact solutions that can significantly reduce our collective emissions. Explore below to find your next step toward a more sustainable future.
Transportation

Get there greener
Greener and cleaner transportation is on the rise, and there’s something for every kind of commuter.
Action step
Choose a lower-emissions way to get where you’re going in your day-to-day routine. Heading to school or work? Take public transit or share a ride with neighbors. For short trips, walk or bike instead of driving. And when it’s time to buy your next car, go electric or hybrid — today’s EVs go farther and charge faster than ever before.
Action step
Every flight counts. If frequent fliers reduced their air travel by just one cross-country or international flight, it could have significant impact. Flying for business? Find opportunities to sub out in-person meetings for teleconferences or remote engagement. Save yourself, and your team, the cost and stress of air travel.
Energy

Electrify your home
Clean energy delivers a triple win: it harnesses renewable resources, builds safer communities, and lowers utility costs for everyone.
Action step
Renters and homeowners alike can switch to clean energy to power their homes and save money on utilities. Select a green power supplier with your utility company, or join a community solar farm that provides clean energy to your local grid. If you can install solar panels on your rooftop, expect to see major savings on your electric bill!
Action step
Look inside your home for energy efficiency savings too. Swap gas appliances with electric alternatives, like an induction stove, or install a heat pump for more consistent home temperatures and a lower gas bill.
Food

Make plants the center of your plate
What we eat matters – for our health and for the planet. Diets that are rich in plant proteins, fruits, and vegetables help us live longer, use up to 20x less land and water, and are easier on the wallet, too.
Action step
Center your dish around plant-based proteins (whether those are fiber-packed beans and lentils or your favorite alternative meats). A good rule of thumb is to fill half of your plate with fruits and veggies, and the rest with plant proteins and grains.
Action step
Reducing food waste makes a big difference. Plan your meals before grocery shopping, understand food date labels, and get creative in the kitchen to use up leftovers. And when you do have scraps, compost them — instead of creating toxic gases in landfills, they can become nutrient-rich soil that helps new life grow.
Sustainability begins with simple steps, and grows through shared action. Each choice we make not only helps shape a cleaner, healthier world for generations to come, but can inspire other people around us to take action too. So let’s keep moving forward, together.
